Corinthians have played five matches on Christmas: check out their record

Christmas is a time of parties and celebrations for many people around the world. Here in Brazil, besides the festivities, the date is marked by the absence of any official matches in the country's main football championships. However, in the past, it wasn't quite like that. Corinthians, for example, has played on December 25th, something that has happened five times in the history of the alvinegro club.

According to a survey by the Almanaque do Timão, the People's Team played five matches on Christmas Day between 1913 and 1945. The last Timão duel on the commemorative date was 80 years ago.

The first match held on this date was in 1913, a state friendly between Corinthians and Germânia, in celebration of Christmas by the Sete de Setembro schools. There is no information about the score and details of the match.

Another friendly took place in 1916, against Rio Claro. Timão won 3 x 2, at the Grêmio dos Empregados da Paulista Field, in Rio Claro. There are no records of the goal scorers.

In 1921, Corinthians faced Palmeiras, then called Palestra Itália, on Christmas. The match was for the Paulistão title for the alvinegros in the last round, competing against the powerful Paulistano. A victory at Parque Antártica would give the trophy to the Corinthians, while the alviverdes had no more chances for the title. However, Timão lost 3 x 0 and ended up in third place.

A few years later, in 1932, Corinthians returned to the field on Christmas, this time to face Portuguesa in a friendly played at Fazendinha. Timão came out on top and won 5 x 1, with goals from Acácio, Rato, Feitiço, twice, and Guimarães. Carioca scored for Lusa.

Finally, the last Corinthians game on Christmas took place in 1945. It was an international friendly against Libertad from Paraguay, at Pacaembu. The game ended in a 3 x 3 draw, with all three alvinegro goals scored by Servílio. Esquivel, twice, and Arévalo scored for the Paraguayan club.
