Corinthians got off the mark in the Brasileirão, beating Red Bull Bragantino 2-0 at Neo Química Arena on Thursday to finish round three in 12th place.
According to Meu Timao, they began the round bottom of the table with a game in hand. The opener brought a 2-1 defeat to Bahia at Vila Belmiro, and they did not play in round two because of the Supercopa do Brasil.
The home victory lifted Corinthians eight places. On three points, they trail 11th-placed Botafogo and sit above Grêmio and Vitória on goal difference.
The middle of the standings is tight. Coritiba and Flamengo are ninth and 10th with four points, Mirassol are eighth and Chapecoense seventh on five. Red Bull Bragantino sit sixth on six points, level with fifth-placed Athletico-PR.
At the top, Palmeiras, São Paulo, Fluminense and Bahia all have seven points, with Palmeiras ahead on goal difference.
Atlético-MG and Remo sit just above the drop on two points. The bottom four are Vasco da Gama, Santos, Internacional and Cruzeiro, each on one from nine.
Corinthians visit Athletico-PR on 19 February at 19:30 at Arena da Baixada. A positive result could take Dorival Júnior’s side as high as fifth, depending on tiebreakers.
Before that, they face São Bernardo on Sunday at 20:30 at Estádio Primeiro de Maio in the final round of the Campeonato Paulista first phase.
