Corinthians out of Paulistão again, beaten by non-big four teams

On the evening of last Saturday (28), Corinthians was eliminated by Novorizontino at the Jorge Ismael de Biasi Stadium, known as Jorjão, in the semifinals of the 2026 Campeonato Paulista after losing 1-0, conceding a goal towards the end of the second half. The Alvinegro bid farewell to the tournament with four wins, three draws, and three losses – scoring 11 goals and conceding eight.

This adverse result also marked the sixth time in its history that the club from Parque São Jorge was eliminated from the Campeonato Paulista by a team outside the state's considered four big clubs (Corinthians, Palmeiras, São Paulo, and Santos). In the state championship, the Alvinegro has already played 27 knockout matches. The data was released by the page Estatísticas Corinthianas on X, formerly Twitter.

The first time Corinthians was eliminated from the Paulistão in the mentioned context was in 1980, when the team was defeated on aggregate against Ponte Preta by 4-1 in the semifinals of the tournament. In the first leg at home, they drew 1-1. In the return leg, however, they lost 3-0. In 1989, also in the semifinals of the state championship, they beat São José 2-0 in the first game and were defeated 3-0 in the second match.

An elimination by a team outside the state's four big clubs in the competition happened again only in 2012, in the quarterfinals of the Campeonato Paulista, when, at Pacaembu, they were defeated by Ponte Preta, 3-2. After that match, goalkeeper Júlio César was no longer the team's starter, and Cássio took over the Corinthians goal. In 2016, in the semifinals of the state championship, they fell to Audax in a penalty shootout in Itaquera, after a 2-2 draw in regular time.

In the 2023 season, the club from Parque São Jorge was eliminated by Ituano in the quarterfinals, also in a penalty shootout, after a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes. In 2026, the situation occurred again, this time being ousted from the Paulistão with a minimal defeat against Novorizontino at the opponent's home.

After being eliminated by Novorizontino in the state semifinals, the club from Parque São Jorge will have some free time for training and recovery of injured players, returning to the field only on the next March 11, Wednesday, at 9:30 PM (Brasília time), at the Neo Química Arena, to face Coritiba in the fifth round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
