Corinthians to settle Garro debt with Talleres before Memphis renewal

After the Technical Council meeting of the Paulista Football Federation (FPF) to define the times and dates of the Paulistão semifinals, the executive football director of Corinthians, Marcelo Paz, gave an interview where he spoke about the debt with Talleres for midfielder Rodrigo Garro and how this is a priority, even above the renewal of Memphis Depay at this moment.

Speaking about the priority of settling the debt with Talleres, Paz explained that this is Corinthians' main problem at the moment, emphasizing that all efforts are fully focused on this issue, even before the renewal of the team's number 10, Memphis Depay, who has only four months left on his contract with the club. He even shared a conversation he had with the player:

“We have prioritized resolving the debt with Talleres, and Memphis knows that. 'Look, Memphis, we are here trying to resolve the situation with Talleres and soon we will look to settle your situation.' He understands this. He is a person of high intellectual level and is very much a Corinthians fan. He wants Corinthians to grow, to win, and to be well.”

It is worth remembering that part of these efforts to settle the 33 million reais debt with the Argentine team involved a trip by Corinthians president Osmar Stabile to Argentina, where he had face-to-face meetings with Talleres president Andrés Fassi to try to find common ground for a payment agreement.

Returning to the subject of Memphis Depay, Marcelo Paz revealed that in the coming days he will have a meeting with the player’s staff to agree on how the debts with the athlete, which already exceed 40 million reais, will be paid: “What does it mean to settle? It means agreeing on how it will be paid. It won’t be all at once, there’s no way it can be all at once. Once you settle this, we can take the next step, which is to think about the renewal. I understand that Corinthians wants it and he wants it. We need to talk, but for now, the focus is on resolving this debt with him and then dealing with the renewal.”

The director also added that he sees it as ideal for the number 10 to go to the World Cup with his contractual situation already resolved, although he did not reveal whether the agreements will be made under the same salary terms as the current contract: “The ideal is for him to travel to the World Cup with his situation resolved. I understand that this is the ideal path and, if we can achieve the ideal path, it would be excellent. I won’t anticipate or say anything because I would be revealing a strategy. Transparency has a limit. The limit is when it comes to strategy. I won’t go into that detail. What I can guarantee is that we will always seek to do something that is viable for Corinthians.”
