Corinthians waste chances, lose to Novorizontino, out of Paulistão

On the night of this Saturday (15), Corinthians faced Novorizontino at Estádio Doutor Jorge Ismael de Biasi, in Novo Horizonte, for the semifinals of the Paulistão and lost by a score of 1-0, bidding farewell to the state championship in the semifinals.

In the first half, Corinthians even created some opportunities, mainly with midfielder André getting into the box, but couldn't put the ball in the net. In defense, they saw Novorizontino try to take advantage of long balls to attack, but maintained consistency and faced few scares. The teams went into halftime with the score still 0-0.

In the second half, Corinthians started well and created good chances, but still couldn't find the net. Novorizontino, with a defensive posture, looked for a single chance and got it, opening the scoring with Mayk after a marking error by André. Timão tried, but couldn't equalize and was eliminated from the state tournament.

Next Match

After facing Novorizontino, Corinthians will return to the field only on the 11th, for the Brazilian Championship, against Coritiba. The match will be played at Neo Química Arena, at 9:30 pm (Brasília time).

Corinthians Lineup

For the match, the Corinthians coaching staff had the following players unavailable: goalkeeper Felipe Longo (right elbow ligament strain), left-back Hugo Farias (recovering from lateral meniscus surgery in the knee), midfielder Matheus Pereira (grade 2 injury in the left thigh biceps femoris), midfielder Zakaria Labyad (physical reconditioning), as well as forwards Kaio César (in the final stage of recovery from a right hamstring injury) and Yuri Alberto (recovering from a grade 2 injury in the left thigh biceps femoris).

Thus, Corinthians started the match with: Hugo Souza; Matheuzinho, Gabriel Paulista, Gustavo Henrique and Matheus Bidu; Raniele, André, Breno Bidon, Allan, Rodrigo Garro and Memphis Depay.

The bench options were: Kauê, João Pedro, André Ramalho, Vitinho, Pedro Raul, Carillo, Pedro Milans, Angileri, Kayke, Charles, Gui Negão and Dieguinho.

Novorizontino Lineup

The opposing team lined up with: Jordi; Ivan Alvariño, Patrick, Dantas and Mayk; Léo Naldi, Luis Oyama, Bianqui and Rômulo; Vinicius Paiva and Robson

Refereeing

The referee was João Vitor Gobi, assisted by Alex Ang Ribeiro and Daniel Paulo Ziolli. The VAR was operated by Adriano de Assis Miranda. All were appointed by the São Paulo Football Federation (FPF).

First Half

The first offensive move of the match was by Corinthians. Timão won a corner right in the first play and Rodrigo Garro took the kick. The number 8 sent it in tight and forced Jordi to palm it away for another corner.

At eight minutes, Memphis Depay was dispossessed in midfield, and Léo Naldi played Robson in behind the Corinthians defense. The player ran alone towards goal, but Gabriel Paulista made an impressive recovery to catch up and dispossess the opponent with a sliding tackle at the edge of the box.

At 15, Rômulo played a one-two with Mayk, the full-back crossed into the box and midfielder Matheus Bianqui rose completely unmarked for the header. The midfielder, however, finished poorly and wasted a clear goal chance.

At 16 minutes, Novorizontino triangulated through the middle, found space in the Corinthians defense and crossed from right to left. The ball reached Vinícius Paiva at the far post, but the forward failed to hit the target.

At 22, André was fouled on the left side of the attack and Memphis Depay took the free kick. The number 10 went for goal and the ball went just over Jordi's crossbar. At 29, André was played in on the left, took on the defender, entered the box and shot hard, forcing Jordi to palm it away to prevent a Corinthians goal.

At 35 minutes, Corinthians made a good play through the middle with Bidon and André. The midfield duo found Matheuzinho free on the right. The full-back looked up and crossed perfectly for Matheus Bidu, who hit a semi-volley but sent it wide.

At 44, Robson received the ball between the Corinthians center-backs, advanced at speed and shot wide, far from goal. The play, however, was annulled for offside at the start of the move. There were no more dangerous chances and the teams went into halftime tied at 0-0.

Second Half

At two minutes, Garro received the ball in space, looked up and played a precise pass to Breno Bidon inside the box. The number 7 controlled it, the ball popped up and he couldn't finish, but the referee had already signaled offside.

In the next play, Bidon passed to Memphis, the Dutchman looked up and shot from the edge of the box. Defender Dantas got a foot to the ball, deflected it and almost caught goalkeeper Jordi off guard. The ball went out for a Corinthians corner.

At ten minutes, Garro broke free down the left and found Matheuzinho free on the right. The full-back played a one-two with Memphis inside the box, finished with the instep and sent the ball just wide of Jordi's right post.

At 13, Castrillón burst down the right, controlled, looked up and crossed into the middle of the box. Forward Robson got ahead and headed, but Gustavo Henrique managed to deflect it for a corner.

At 19 minutes, from a free kick on the left of the attack, Memphis feinted a direct shot and just rolled it to Garro inside the box. The Argentine appeared alone at the penalty spot in a rehearsed play, went for the shot, but missed the ball and wasted a good chance.

Novorizontino's goal: at 28 minutes, Rômulo played Robson in down the right. The forward crossed to the far post and found Mayk completely unmarked running behind André. The full-back just tapped it into the net, with no chance for Hugo Souza to save.

With the goal, Corinthians pushed forward to try for an aerial ball and saw the opponent close up completely to hold the result. At 48, Dieguinho crossed to the edge of the box, Memphis threw himself at the ball and hit a volley, but the shot was weak and Jordi saved easily.

At 50, Dieguinho entered the box, shot powerfully with his left foot, and goalkeeper Jordi made a spectacular save. That was the last chance and Corinthians ended up defeated 1-0.
