AC Milan hoped that life under Paulo Fonseca would be a step forward from Stefano Pioli. If that step were one towards entering a nightmare, a report claims they have taken it, with the situation becoming dangerous.
Football is analysed in two ways: the eye test and the numbers. So far this season, Milan are failing in both. Barring two standout performances, the season has been frustratingly sub-par, and the fans are left picking at scraps for signs of potential.
As Corriere dello Sport (via Pianeta Milan) write, Fonseca’s tenure has been characterised by ‘so many disappointing matches and results’, and as a result the Scudetto is already fading, despite continued efforts from the club to keep belief.
At present, the club are on ‘Europa League pace’, with the season becoming a ‘nightmare’ quickly, and the numbers only prove this.
Milan have won less than 50% of their games under Fonseca, and each win has cost €14 million after €70m of spending in the summer. It is, for many reasons, a season that never started, and this goes back to the first three games of the season.
The Diavolo lack an identity with Fonseca still yet to decide his preferred starting squad, and the ‘dominant Milan’ that was promised was nowhere to be seen against Juventus.
Whilst their destiny remains in their hands, the data is disturbing and there are similarities to Marco Giampaolo’s time at the club, which the report calls a ‘terrible suspicion’. Things must change, if they don’t the season will become a write-off, if it is not already.
