Courtois has suffered a muscle injury to the rectus femoris in his right quadriceps. Real Madrid said in a statement that he is being monitored to determine the length of his lay-off, with the timeframe thought to be around six weeks. Álvaro Arbeloa is set to turn to Andrei Lunin, who has impressed when deputising.

The problem arose during the warm-up against Manchester City in Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 second leg at the Etihad Stadium. He played the first half without obvious discomfort, then was replaced at the break by Lunin, who produced several fine saves.

Arbeloa said after the match that the change was precautionary and he hoped Courtois would be ready for Sunday.

On Wednesday it became clear this was more than a simple overload, and a more serious muscle issue was suspected. Confirmation followed on Thursday, and Courtois is now set to miss Sunday’s derby against Atlético at the Bernabéu.

He will probably also miss the Champions League quarter-final meetings with Bayern Munich. He is not expected to be available for La Liga fixtures against Mallorca, Girona, Alavés and Betis.
