Dan Ballard completed 45 minutes on his return from injury as Sunderland lost 4-2 to Liverpool at Geodis Park in Nashville, and he believes the team will keep improving across their United States tour.

According to Sunderland Echo, the Northern Ireland centre-back made his first pre-season appearance after ankle surgery cut short his 25-26 campaign, having missed the opener against York City. He had returned to full training before the game and started alongside Luke O'Nien.

Sunderland produced an encouraging first half against top-class opposition, with Enzo Le Fée bending in a fine equaliser. Régis Le Bris then changed all 10 outfield players at half-time.

Ballard said the Tennessee heat made the contest demanding but felt it was a valuable step in his recovery. After months out, he stressed it is about building every game, acknowledging Liverpool’s press and that Sunderland have plenty to refine.

He was also taken aback by the size of the travelling support in Nashville, calling the experience superb and saying the trip and climate should benefit the squad.

Ballard praised Le Fée’s quality and hopes the Frenchman can carry that level into next season’s Premier League and Europa League.
