Rangers have confirmed the signing of former Sunderland captain Dan Neil on a free transfer, with the 24-year-old calling it a new chapter after leaving Wearside amid links to Southampton.
Neil said he is really excited and looking forward to the next few years. He spoke of Sunderland’s weekly expectation to win, said Rangers feels similar, and vowed to give his all each day.
An Academy of Light graduate from South Shields, he made 201 senior appearances for Sunderland, scoring 12 goals.
He helped win promotion from League One in 2022, then captained Régis Le Bris’ side to the Premier League via the 2024-25 play-offs.
Neil wore the armband as Sunderland beat Sheffield United 2-1 at Wembley, ending an eight-year wait for top-flight football. He featured in 47 league games that season, scoring twice, before a loan to Ipswich for the second half of last term.
He made 16 Championship appearances for the Tractor Boys as they secured promotion to the Premier League. Rangers manager Derek McInnes said Neil is technically gifted, strong in possession, able to contribute goals and full of energy.
