Dan Neil finalised a switch to Rangers on Wednesday, signing a three-year contract. The midfielder sought advice from Sunderland alumni before opting for the club amid interest from top Championship teams.

"Dan Neil called me the other day and asked if he could have two minutes of my time to speak about Rangers," said Jermain Defoe to Sky Sports.

"And before he even spoke, I said: 'Dan, you have got to go, honestly.'"

"If you want a challenge, you have to go. For Rangers, they are signing a top player."

"I was looking for certain characteristics in a football club and what drives me as a player and a person," Neil said. "I think Rangers fit all the criteria and that is why I have decided to sign here."

"I spoke to Jermain Defoe and I spoke to Graeme Murty. They were the main ones. Ross Stewart is from Glasgow and I spoke to him about the area and they all spoke glowingly about the club and the area."

"They pretty much made my mind up for me. Jermain said it is a chance to fight for trophies and titles. I have played for Sunderland for a number of years and the weight and expectation to win every week is something that drives me."

"I have spoken to many people who have been here and they said it is a similar feeling, and that really drives me to give 110 per cent day in and day out."
