Sheffield Wednesday have appointed Simon Wilson as sporting director following their relegation from the Championship, with the position newly created at Hillsborough.

Wilson arrives after leaving Stockport County at the end of last season, having been a key figure in their rise from the National League to League One. He initially served as director of football before becoming chief executive at Edgeley Park.

Stockport reached the League One play-off final last month, where they were beaten by Bolton Wanderers.

His CV includes roles with Manchester City, Sunderland, Southampton, Leicester City, Sparta Prague and Ajax, reflecting experience across England and Europe.

Setting out his approach, Wilson described Wednesday as a historic club with a unique identity and passionate supporters, and said the energy of Hillsborough should shape recruitment, playing style and culture. He added that success would require patience, consistency and alignment, with the focus on building sustainable progress rather than seeking quick fixes.

Chief executive officer David Bruce called the appointment an important moment, highlighting Wilson’s strategic intelligence, elite football knowledge and proven operational leadership. He framed the move as part of modernising the club and strengthening its football structure to provide the strongest possible platform for long-term success.
