Davide Ancelotti looked frustrated on the bench after realising Kylian Mbappé deserved a straight red for a reckless tackle on Alaves midfielder Antonio Blanco.

The French superstar received the first red card of his Real Madrid career on Sunday afternoon for a dangerous tackle on Alaves’ Blanco.

Carlo Ancelotti served a one-game ban, so his son and assistant, Davide, led the team from the touchline.

Footage from Spanish TV showed a highly frustrated Davide Ancelotti watching the replay of Mbappé’s foul, realising there was just a possible ending to a quick VAR check.

“I didn’t talk to him after the game,” Ancelotti said at a post-match press conference.

“Kylian is not a violent guy, and he apologised. He realised he had made a mistake. Surely, it’s a clear red and he paid the consequence. Surely, he had not been given many fouls, which made him react this way. It’s not a justification, but I think this is why it happened.”
