Alphonso Davies is set for his first World Cup appearance tonight as Canada face South Africa in the Round of 32, having recovered from a hamstring injury that sidelined him during the group stage.
According to BuLi News, the Bayern Munich full-back missed all three group matches, and Canada coach Jesse Marsch said he is now available and ready to play.
Marsch said Davies is healthy and believes his return is a big boost for the squad. He described him as an X factor, adding that his presence lifts belief and could broaden what the team can achieve at this tournament.
He added they were fairly sure early on that minutes in the group stage were unlikely, and telling their best player to wait was painful. Decisions were taken in Davies’ best interests, with a plan leading to him being back on the pitch now.
Davies said it was painful to watch from the bench and admitted he asked to play before the third game. After talking with the coach, he accepted the decision and said he is eager to represent his country at his peak.
