Jesse Marsch said Alphonso Davies was left out of Canada’s World Cup round of 16 defeat to Morocco as a precaution after training discomfort, with an MRI showing no injury.

According to BuLi News, the Bayern Munich full-back felt a hamstring issue on the eve of the match and was not risked.

"Alphonso didn't feel right yesterday in training and we got an MRI," Marsch said. "The good news was that there was no injury, but his hamstring didn't feel right."

He added that Canada hoped an overnight improvement would make him available, but it did not, so they chose caution to avoid risking anything.

"At the 60th minute when it's 1-0, it would've been great to have him in the match. Or even at halftime," he said. "But we weren't able to have him healthy."

"It killed him more than anyone," the former RB Leipzig coach said, calling it the right decision to protect the 25-year-old and get him fully healthy. Marsch’s comments indicate the absence was precautionary rather than the result of a confirmed hamstring injury, offering reassurance to Bayern supporters.
