Sunderland are reported to be closing in on Toulouse’s Dayann Methalie, a France Under-21 left-sider, as they target a second summer signing. He has also been linked with Newcastle United and Aston Villa in recent months.
RMC Sport claims Methalie has agreed a long-term contract with Sunderland, and that any move would be a record sale for Toulouse. The report says he chose Sunderland amid wider interest, values him at around £25m, and adds talks between the clubs could conclude in the coming days.
Often listed as a left-back, he has also played as a left-sided centre-back, wing-back and winger. That range would hand Regis Le Bris options as Sunderland prepare for only the second European campaign in their history.
Methalie has four France Under-21 caps, receiving his first call-up in October last year. He featured with Leny Yoro and Warren Zaire-Emery in a 6-0 win over the Faroe Islands, marking his debut with two goals, and has also appeared for the Under-20s and Under-18s.
“It is flattering. One day, I will have to leave. I would like to play at the highest level. For now, I have to keep doing what I’m doing”, he told Telefoot.
