Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin left the England camp early under a pre-planned arrangement, not due to form, according to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk.

The 29-year-old earned a first call-up in five years after a strong debut season at Leeds, scoring 10 Premier League goals. England manager Thomas Tuchel named a 35-man squad, with Harry Kane among those rested for Friday’s friendly. It came in the final international window before this summer’s World Cup.

Dominic Solanke started against Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay, with Calvert-Lewin introduced on 56 minutes. He headed a Cole Palmer free-kick wide on 70 minutes, Ben White then scored before Federico Valverde equalised from the penalty spot to end it 1-1.

Tuchel then reintegrated his first-team unit for Japan, and eight players returned to their clubs. Calvert-Lewin was among those to depart, while Solanke stayed on to support the returning Kane.

There was no suggestion of any fitness issue for the Leeds striker.

Other exits included an Arsenal trio of Noni Madueke, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, who went back to the Emirates for medical checks. John Stones and Adam Wharton returned to Manchester City and Crystal Palace respectively after knocks.

Calvert-Lewin is back at Leeds and could feature in Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final at West Ham if Daniel Farke goes full strength. He should also be refreshed for a critical league run-in, with seven games remaining.
