Duncan Watmore has retired from professional football at 32 and is joining PEAK4 as Head of Elite Performance & Business Development.

According to Sunderland Echo, the former Sunderland forward was a free agent after leaving Rotherham United and, despite interest from a number of clubs, chose to move into business. He holds a first-class degree and a master’s in business.

Watmore made a major impact after arriving from Altrincham, playing a key role in Sunderland’s successful bid to avoid relegation under Sam Allardyce in 2025/16. His progress was badly hit by two ACL injuries and he left at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

He rebuilt impressively, becoming a regular at Middlesbrough and Millwall in the years that followed. He ends his career with over 50 goals from more than 300 appearances.

After a period of reflection, Watmore said it was the right time to retire and begin a new chapter. He thanked every club he played for, his agent, managers, coaches, medical and performance staff, team-mates and supporters, and paid special tribute to his family. He added that PEAK4’s mission to bring elite sport principles into business, leadership and workforce wellbeing is something he believes in, and he looks forward to helping build something meaningful.
