Egypt’s Football Association confirmed plans to request hosting AFCON in 2032 or 2036 pending official approval from the Egyptian government.

Egypt ready to return as AFCON host

The Egyptian Football Association EFA announced on Sunday 26 January that it intends to formally submit a bid to host the Africa Cup of Nations in either 2032 or 2036.

However the EFA confirmed that it will first seek approval from the Egyptian government before sending the official request to the Confederation of African Football CAF.

The decision came during a board meeting that reviewed a letter from the Ministry of Youth and Sports encouraging the federation to begin the hosting process.

National team friendlies confirmed ahead of World Cup

Alongside the hosting plans, the EFA also approved the technical program for Egypt’s senior national team as part of preparations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Egypt scheduled to play two international friendlies in Qatar during the March window:

  1. Saudi Arabia on 26 March
  2. Spain four day later

A third major friendly is also planned in June, with Egypt set to face Brazil in Ohio, United States as part of final preparations before the World Cup.

Egypt’s AFCON hosting history

Egypt last hosted the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019 where the Pharaohs were eliminated in the round of 16 by South Africa.

The country has hosted AFCON five times in total:

1959, 1974, 1986, 2006 and 2019 and remains the tournament’s most successful nation with record seven titles including three won on home soil in 1959, 1986 and 2006.

Egypt finished fourth at the most recent AFCON edition which was held in Morocco and won by Senegal.

Future AFCON hosts still being decided

CAF announced that AFCON will move to four-year hosting cycle starting in 2028 making future editions more spaced out and increasing competition among host nations.

The next AFCON tournament is scheduled to take place in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in 2027 while the host countries for 2028 and beyond have not yet been confirmed.
