Eliezer Mayenda has sealed a switch to Stade Rennais, signing a five-year contract. The 21-year-old has offered his first words as a Rennes player after Sunderland agreed a package that could be worth around £22 million if all add-ons are triggered.
The club said in a statement that everyone at Sunderland thanked him for his contribution and wished him well in the next chapter.
He delivered an emotional farewell on Saturday evening before confirmation and spoke of excitement for what lies ahead with his new club.
Mayenda describes himself as a complete forward who runs in behind, dribbles and takes on defenders, and he is eager to play at Roazhon Park and link up with his new team-mates in Ligue 1.
His pace, versatility and ability to stretch defences were emphasised, as was his capacity to operate wide or through the middle. His experience across leagues and an exemplary mentality were also stressed.
There was strong competition for his signature and clear determination to join, with a warm welcome extended to him and his family and hopes for a smooth transition so he can bring his qualities to the team.
In his farewell, he reflected on three years at Sunderland, recalling big dreams, pride in the shirt and a magical day at Wembley he said took the club back to the Premier League. He thanked chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, team-mates and staff, and hailed supporters, saying he leaves as their Big Man and that the club will always be part of him.
