Liverpool still have a lot of work to do before their first Premier League game of the season against Newcastle on 23 August.

The Anfield outfit were expected to have another busy summer transfer window after they failed to meet expectations last term.

Arne Slot's men finished fifth in England's top flight, just a season after winning the title.

This was a massive fall from grace and, although injuries can take some of the blame, Slot's decisions gave off some massive red flags.

In the end, Fenway Sports Group decided to get rid of the Dutchman and replace him with Andoni Iraola who was expected to be given at least a handful of new players to help turn things more in his favour.

So far, that has not been the case with only Victor Munoz and Jeremy Jacquet being brought in.

However, that could all be about to change with the latest update to emerge from Anfield something that fans should certainly be excited about.

Ezri Konsa is now under 'serious consideration' by Liverpool

Liverpool's back line is one of their main problem areas.

At the moment, they only have four centre-backs to choose from with three of them currently being ruled out of contention due to injury.

This is why the Reds need to sign a new centre-back or two as soon as possible because, without that extra back-up, there's no way that they'll be back challenging for silverware.

Liverpool's lack of depth at centre-back has been well advertised in the media this summer and now, it seems like the Anfield outfit are finally taking the steps needed to rectify the issue.

That is, if an update from TEAMtalk is to be believed.

"Liverpool are actively exploring the market for an experienced centre-back after Andoni Iraola made it clear he wants greater defensive depth before the new season gets underway, TEAMtalk understands," they wrote.

"Sources have confirmed to us that the Reds’ new head coach has highlighted central defence as a priority after a disrupted start to pre-season exposed the club’s lack of senior options.

"TEAMtalk understands that has prompted the club to step up work on potential additions, with England internationals John Stones and Ezri Konsa both under serious consideration.

"Konsa has also emerged as a genuine option.

"The Aston Villa defender is admired for his versatility, with Liverpool valuing not only his quality at centre-back but also his ability to operate at right-back when required – a trait Iraola believes would add significant flexibility to his squad.

"TEAMtalk understands Arsenal remain keen on Konsa, but Liverpool have now entered the picture as they assess multiple defensive targets."

Ezri Konsa would be PERFECT for Liverpool

One of the things that Liverpool are seriously lacking among their ranks at the moment is experience.

The Anfield outfit may be preparing their team for the future but, if they're not good enough now then what is the point of planning ahead?

Iraola has an awful lot of work to do at Anfield before the 2026-27 season properly kicks off and, signing Ezri Konsa would certainly go a long way towards achieving his goals.

The Englishman had an extremely impressive 2026 World Cup and was arguably one of England's best defenders this summer.

Konsa's versatility, coupled with his Premier League experience and the fact that he's only 28 years old make it obvious why he'd be a good signing for Liverpool.

The Reds have an Ibrahima Konate-sized hole that needs to be filled and, even though the club may believe that they can rely on Joe Gomez or Jacquet to plug that gap, it feels like too big of a risk for them to take at this moment.

A move for Konsa obviously wouldn't come cheap but, if Iraola can convince FSG to splash the cash and bring him in, the Reds would have a much better chance of earning some silverware this term.
