Sunderland are planning for Europe after clinching Europa League qualification, and key dates for 2026-27 have now been set.
One year to the day after their late Wembley winner against Sheffield United, the Black Cats sealed seventh place with a 2-1 home victory over Club World Cup champions Chelsea. Sunderland Echo notes that supporters can now pencil in the competition schedule as the squad and staff take a well-earned summer break.
Head coach Regis Le Bris urged the club to stay humble ahead of a demanding campaign with an extended fixture list. He said Sunderland feel strong underlying structures and would not set limits for next season. He also cautioned that the second Premier League season can be tough, so the first aim is to be strong domestically before tackling Europe.
Sunderland and Bournemouth go straight into the Europa League proper, guaranteeing eight matches, four at home and four away, while Brighton must qualify for the Conference League league phase. Teams will be seeded into four pots by coefficient, then each club will face two opponents from every pot, one at home and one away. After eight gameweeks, the top eight advance directly to the last 16, the bottom eight are eliminated, and those in 16th to 24th enter a two-legged knockout round.
The league phase draw is on Friday 28 August 2026. Matchdays are 16 to 17 September, 15 October, 22 October, 5 November, 26 November and 10 December 2026, then 21 and 28 January 2027. The final is at the Waldstadion in Frankfurt on 26 May 2027.
