The Blue Girls go into the new campaign with a much-improved squad after adding nine new faces to the dressing room over the summer.
When speaking to the media ahead of this weekend’s Merseyside derby at Liverpool, Sørensen discussed his side’s targets for the new season. He said that more consistency in performances against the sides outside of the top-four is required this term.
“The main target is having consistency and stability in the team because we haven’t had that for three years,” Sørensen said.
“From the results side, what is that going to bring us? For me, I don’t think the hardest thing is to get a good result against the top-four, potentially top-five depending on how London City are spending. We can always make a plan, get everything right and beat a [Manchester] City as we did, get a point against Arsenal and so on.
“The hardest thing is to be consistent against the teams around us; to win against Liverpool, to win against Brighton, to win against Villa, Leicester, West Ham and so on. That’s going to be hardest thing and that’s why we are eager to get consistency in our performance. If we are consistent with that, hopefully, we will end up in the better part of the table, that’s what we need to get right.”
Under Sørensen, Everton have enjoyed some impressive victories over Liverpool at Anfield in the past but he says that history counts for nothing ahead of the latest derby instalment.
He said “It always gives you confidence but it’s water under the bridge, it’s history, Sunday is a new game.
“We have quite a new team, they have a new manager and I think they’ll do some [transfer] business last minute, so we don’t exactly know what to expect. It’s a one-off game, it’s a derby, so form goes out of the window.
“It’s very hard to predict from how we’ve both been looking in pre-season; we’ve both played different opponents with different styles and we’ve both worked on different things.
“Overall, I think we are ready and that’s the most important thing. We are really looking forward to it and hopefully, history repeats itself in our favour. We know it’s going to be a hard game.”
Gareth Taylor takes charge of Liverpool for the first time this weekend and Sørensen expects his opposite number to implement a similar playing style to the one adopted by former club Manchester City.
He said “Yeah, for sure [a similar playing style]. I think that’s why they brought him in. He comes with a clear idea of how he wants to play football. From what we could see in pre-season, they are trying to implement that.
“We have an okay understanding of what we will face but again, there could be some new players in the mix, new constellations in the team, that’s what we need to see and prepare for.
“I think they will play good football, they will be very organised, so it’s a tough game for sure.”
Everton’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Liverpool kicks-off at 12pm on Sunday afternoon.
