Merlin Röhl sends his best wishes to SC Freiburg ahead of the Europa League clash against Aston Villa. The 23-year-old midfielder left Bundesliga to join Everton on an initial loan deal at the start of this season.
“I’ve seen almost every Freiburg game this season when I haven’t played myself,” admitted Röhl as he also revealed his strong bond with Maximilian Eggestein via phone calls after games.
“I would have loved to have flown along, and witnessed the game on site in the stadium,” Röhl added regarding Wednesday’s final. “Unfortunately, this is not possible. That’s why I have to cheer while watching it on TV, and hopefully also celebrate and congratulate my old colleagues.”
Röhl had his Premier League debut in Everton’s goalless draw at Villa Park on matchday 4. After a difficult time with injuries and selection issues, he became a starter in the last three Premier League games. He was one of the best players when Everton drew with Manchester City, before scoring his first goal in Sunday’s defeat to Sunderland.
“I am just incredibly proud of every individual in the team, and I am absolutely pleased that they played such a successful season again and achieved something so historic. I hope the team will bravely approach this final, enjoy it, and hopefully win the game.” Röhl concluded by sending his best wishes.
