Spending a huge amount of money does not guarantee success, but it can certainly help at time when English clubs boast almost unrivalled finances.
With the Premier League’s current financial rules, net spend is more crucial than ever. An ability to sell – as well as buy – well is vital to the building of a successful squad.
But which Premier League clubs have invested the most in recent seasons? Liverpool and Chelsea might have shattered spending records in recent windows, but neither lead when it comes to net spend.
Manchester United are the highest net spenders in the Premier League across the last five seasons, at €783m, with the Red Devils ahead of Arsenal (€770m) and Chelsea (€755m) in the rankings.
Brighton, meanwhile, are the only Premier League team to have turned over a profit in that period. The Seagulls’ substantial sales, including Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, and Joao Pedro have contributed to a net spend figure of -€2.3m, putting Brighton in the black.
Wolves (€10m) and Everton (€14m) are down alongside the South Coast side as the most frugal teams in the division.
Impressively, Aston Villa rank only 16th for net spent across the last five seasons, despite the club’s impressive progress under Unai Emery. Villa secured Champions League qualification for the first time in 2023-24 and are well positioned to reach Europe’s elite again this season.
