Tyler Roberts is set to depart St. Andrew's on yet another loan basis

Birmingham City's attacking outcast Tyler Roberts is set to depart St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park on a loan basis, with the forward currently undergoing a medical at League One side Mansfield Town, Football League World can exclusively reveal.

The West Midlands side acquired Roberts' services in the summer of 2023 just weeks after Knighthead Capital Management acquired control of the club in what was John Eustace's final transfer window in charge. However, the following two seasons couldn't have panned out much worse for the ex-Leeds United forward.

Since then, Blues have embarked on a new era under the management of Chris Davies, with Roberts playing no part in the club's record-breaking League One title-winning campaign in which the EFL points record was smashed.

Many on the terraces in B9 could have been forgiven for forgetting the 26-year-old was still contracted to the club ahead of the current Championship campaign in which Blues have taken seven points from the opening four encounters, with Roberts not even present within the 'Men's First Team' section of the club's official website.

And after spending the vast majority of last season on loan at Northampton Town, Roberts is now set for yet another temporary departure to the third-tier, with his switch to Nigel Clough's side imminent.

As previously mentioned, being the first-ever signing of the Tom Wagner era in the Second City on a four-year contract, Roberts could not have envisaged his current predicament at the time.

After making his debut for the club in a 1-1 draw against Swansea City in August 2023, the West Bromwich Albion academy product was sidelined for a lengthy period with a heel injury, eventually returning to action in the latter weeks of Wayne Rooney's disastrous 15-game reign.

His solitary goal for Blues came in a 3-0 success against Coventry City in April 2024 - his last B9 appearance for the club - before the final of 21 appearances to date came the following week in a dismal goalless draw at Rotherham United as the side sleepwalked to relegation.

After failing to make an impact at Northampton under Jon Brady and Kevin Nolan last term - with his only league goal coming in a 2-1 win at Leyton Orient in March - it was no surprise when Football League World exclusively revealed that the 20-time international was omitted from Birmingham's pre-season training camp in Portugal ahead of an expected exit.

With just hours left of the transfer window, FLW can now reveal that Roberts is set for a loan move from the West to East Midlands, and he will link up with Mansfield for the remainder of the campaign.

The Stags currently sit 10th in League One after a steady start which has seen them take 10 points from the first 18 available, and they are next in action away to Wycombe Wanderers.

The man who cost Leeds United £2.5m back in 2018 has become a shadow of his former self in the past two seasons, and is at the stage of his career where regular football is the most important aspect.

Roberts has become a victim of the well-documented ambition shown by Knighthead at St. Andrew's, with there seemingly no way back in terms of his Blues career, with all of Kyogo Furuhashi, Jay Stansfield, Marvin Ducksch and Lyndon Dykes all in front of him in the pecking order.

He must grasp the opportunity of yet another reprieve at Field Mill, where he joins a side stacked with experience and lots of bodies in the attacking department, such as Will Evans - who netted 14 times last term, Dom Dwyer, Joe Gardner, Rhys Oates and Max Dickov.

Roberts' contract with Blues expires in the summer of 2027, meaning a strong loan spell certainly puts him in the shop window.
