Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has given his thoughts on Liverpool winger Lewis Koumas amid links with Birmingham City.
Birmingham City are linked with a move for Liverpool winger Lewis Koumas.
The talented youngster spent last season on loan in the Midlands with Stoke City, and it is reported that the Premier League champions are looking to send the 19-year-old out either temporarily once again or permanently.
The reports come from the Liverpool Echo, who outline that several Championship clubs have been alerted to the availability, with Birmingham City, Sheffield United and Wrexham mentioned.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman was asked whether he believes Koumas has something to offer for Chris Davies' Blues side, and he remained unsure whether that would be the case as Birmingham look to throw themselves into the promotion race.
"I am not sure at this stage of his career that Lewis Koumas would get regular game time at Birmingham City," said Goodman, keen to outline the youngster's talent that is, as of now, untapped.
"Ultimately, last season at Stoke, he started off well and looked a real handful, a real threat. But there were inconsistencies, no doubt about it. You are always going to get that with young players."
"He didn't have an impact for Stoke from early February onwards; he didn't get a goal or an assist in the Championship. He was very inconsistent."
Koumas made 49 appearances for the Potters in all competitions, scoring six goals. He also continued to appear for Wales after debuting for his country in June last year.
Goodman raised the question of whether his current level would translate to a Birmingham side that aim to fight among the promotion chasers.
"My question is, would he get regular game time for Birmingham City? And when I look at their squad, I am not so sure about that."
Birmingham are showing serious ambition ahead of their Championship return.
The signings of Tommy Doyle, Kyogo Furuhashi, Demarai Gray and more all indicate that the Blues are a club with serious ambitions of not staying in the second tier for too long.
Their recent Amazon documentary backs this up, with their American ownership carrying sky-high hopes for the club.
Koumas showed signs of development at Stoke last term. However, he is far from the finished product. With Birmingham's big-name arrivals this summer alongside proven Championship quality with the likes of Doyle, a move to St Andrews could be too big for the youngster, especially without the guarantee of game time.
However, the 19-year-old has talent; the task now is to find consistency.
While Birmingham's ambition of swiftly leaving the Championship means they don't necessarily have the time to develop youngsters, Koumas is a player who showed enough at the Bet365 stadium to warrant another move to the second division, whether that be permanently or temporarily.
If a club in the Championship is to continue fully unlocking his talents, they could have a gem of a player on their hands.
