Romaine Sawyers is waiting on a contract offer to reunite with one of his former clubs, Walsall, FLW understands.
Romaine Sawyers is waiting for a contract offer from Walsall before deciding upon his next career move, Football League World has exclusively been informed.
Walsall are hoping to go one better in League Two next season, after suffering play-off final heartbreak to AFC Wimbledon at Wembley Stadium.
2024/25 was a year that saw Mat Sadler's side emerge from their mid-table mediocrity to become one of the fourth tier's biggest players, and as a result, the club have been busy this summer adding a host of new faces to the squad in order to get over the promotion line next term.
One of those new Saddlers signings could yet prove to be Romaine Sawyers.
Football League World has exclusively been informed that the 33-year-old - who has been out-of-contract since leaving Bristol Rovers - has returned to the Midlands where he is currently waiting for a contract offer from Mat Sadler’s side.
The former Brentford and Cardiff City playmaker returned to the club that gave him his big chance last week as a trialist in the game against Aston Villa.
Sawyers was given his break in the Black Country by then Saddlers’ chief Dean Smith back all the way back in March 2013, first joining on loan from West Brom where he was a part of their academy and then on a free transfer in the summer of that year.
Sawyers has been away with St Kitts & Nevis on international duty during June, where he played 90 minutes against both Trinidad and Tobago as well as St. Kitts and Nevis - a game in which he scored and provided an assist in - and has only just returned to full-time training.
That was the reason for his reduced time on the Bescot pitch last week as he returns to pre-season following a couple of weeks off after his international double-header.
Walsall's have received numerous blows to their central midfield department this summer.
Alfie Chang has returned to parent club Birmingham City, whilst Jack Earing and Ryan Stirk have switched allegiances to fellow League Two sides Barrow and Chesterfield respectively.
So, whilst the Saddlers do still have Charlie Lakin, Brandon Comley and Jamie Jellis in their midfield ranks, the signing of a veteran and experienced player such as Sawyers would surely be a welcome addition to the squad.
Sawyers is a vastly experienced EFL campaigner, having made over 230 Championship appearances, just shy of 150 in League One, and he's even made 19 Premier League outings during his time with West Brom - per Transfermarkt.
He was superb during his just over three-year spell with the club between March 2013-July 2016, making over 160 appearances for the Saddlers, and becoming an integral member of the team in the process.
Therefore, his return would surely be welcomed by the vast majority of Walsall supporters, and it may prove to be far more than just a sentimental signing, as his experience and ability could be vital if the club are to win promotion to League One next season.
