Lee Hendrie has given his reaction to reports that Dejphon Chansiri could look to keep hold of Hillsborough, even if he sells Sheffield Wednesday.

Pundit Lee Hendrie believes it would be bad news for Sheffield Wednesday if owner Dejphon Chansiri retains control of Hillsborough, even after selling the club.

It has been a nightmare time for Wednesday under Chansiri's ownership, and after paying the wages of players and staff late in five of the last seven months, they are banned from paying transfer fees for the next three windows, while they are also currently under five separate transfer embargoes.

In the latest worrying off-field development at Hillsborough, it was revealed by the Daily Mail last week that the Owls are just days away from being served with a winding-up petition, with the size of their unpaid tax bill due to HMRC believed to be around £750,000.

If Chansiri is unable to settle that debt, he may have no other option but to put the Owls into administration, which is a decision only he could make as he is the club's sole director, but with a number of parties still interested in buying the club, supporters are hopeful that scenario can be avoided.

However, even if Chansiri was to agree to a sale or put the club into administration, journalist Alan Nixon claims that he is planning to keep hold of Hillsborough, which he owns separately from the club, and that would mean that any new Wednesday owner would have to pay rent to continue playing at their iconic stadium or even consider relocating elsewhere.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Hendrie admitted that he can understand why Chansiri is keen to hold on to Hillsborough to recoup some of his money back, but he insisted that his continued connection to the club would be bad news for Wednesday.

"I think the sooner Chansiri is away from Sheffield Wednesday, the better," Hendrie said.

"I think it would be bad news if he was to have a connection with the club in any way, shape or form, whether it be with the stadium or the club.

"I think, with how things have been and how sour it has gone, it would be bad news if he was to keep hold of Hillsborough.

"There just seems to be a bad vibe around what he's done and how he's gone about his business.

"I totally understand that he wants to get as much money back as he can for the club, but unfortunately, that doesn't seem like it is going to be the case.

"It does seem that he wants to hold on to something, maybe to try and get some money back if the club are to be a little be successful.

"But I think the sooner he is away from the club, the better."

As they step up their attempts to force Chansiri to sell, Wednesday supporters are planning a boycott of the game against Middlesbrough at Hillsborough on Wednesday night, and further action is likely over the coming weeks as the club's off-field crisis deepens, particularly in light of the latest update regarding the stadium.

With many Owls fans having reservations about whether Chansiri is truly willing to sell the club, some are even starting to see administration as a positive outcome as it would mean an end to his nightmare reign, even though it would come with a damaging 12-point deduction.

However, as Chansiri owns Hillsborough separately, it seems as though he would be able to keep control of the stadium, even if Wednesday were to go into administration, and that means he could remain connected to the club for some time to come, unless any new owner is prepared to pay what would likely be a significant sum to take if off his hands.
