Although it was a season to forget for the entire team, one Real Madrid player who had a particularly bad 2025-26 campaign was the fullback Ferland Mendy. The Frenchman remained unavailable for almost the entirety of the season, and was able to play only in 9 games.

Still, he appeared in two highly important games for Los Blancos during the last season, against Manchester City and Bayern Munich, and his performances in these games gave enough reason to the club to continue hoping that the French defender would return to his best version once he gets rid of his injuries.

As things stand, Mendy is still recovering from a hamstring injury that he suffered on 11 May, while playing against Espanyol in La Liga, for which he had to undergo surgery. He seems to be making good progress in this recovery process, as Diario AS reports that he has already returned to train on grass, even though he still has to go some way before he can start training with his teammates.

The medical report published by Real Madrid after his injury stipulated his recovery period to be around 5 months, which means he should be expected to get back on the pitch only in November.

However, even after returning from his injury, he will not find an easy situation at the Merengue club. Although his defensive capabilities are beyond any doubt, he will have to compete with a player like Marc Cucurella, who remained a key part for Spain in their journey to the World Cup 2026 triumph. Furthermore, the presence of Alvaro Carreras means the Frenchman would also have to fight for second place in the left-back pecking order.

Hopefully, Ferland Mendy will be able to quickly regain full fitness and can put his injury problems behind him permanently to help Real Madrid win more silverware in the coming years, after already having played an important role in the last two Champions League triumphs for his club.
