Fernando Diniz has started his Corinthians reign with six unbeaten matches, sealed by Sunday’s Brasileiro victory. According to Meu Timao, he is the fourth manager this century to begin with a six-game undefeated run.
The sequence began with a 2-0 win over Platense in the Libertadores, a 0-0 league draw with Palmeiras, a 2-0 win against Independiente Santa Fe in the Libertadores, a 0-0 draw with Vitória, then 1-0 wins against Barra in the Copa do Brasil and Vasco in the league.
In 2005 Márcio Bittencourt won six from six, starting with 6-1 against União São João while interim, then beating Athletico Paranaense and Figueirense 2-1, Atlético Mineiro 1-0, and Flamengo and Brasiliense 4-2.
Later in 2005 Antônio Lopes matched the streak, drawing 1-1 with River Plate, defeating Brasiliense 3-2, Fluminense 2-0, Fortaleza 3-0 and Santos 3-2, then drawing 1-1 with Palmeiras.
Tite did it twice. In 2010 he opened with 1-0 over Palmeiras and 1-1 with Flamengo, then beat Avaí 4-0, São Paulo 2-0 and Cruzeiro 1-0 before a 1-1 with Vitória. In 2015 his side beat Marília 3-0, Once Caldas 4-0 and Palmeiras 1-0, drew 1-1 with Once Caldas, then defeated Botafogo-SP 2-1 and São Paulo 2-0.
Diniz has fewer wins and a smaller goal difference than the other runs, but his team have not conceded in any of the six games. Corinthians now face Peñarol of Uruguay in the Libertadores on Thursday at 21:00 at Neo Química Arena.
