Fernando Seabra has informed Coritiba he will remain head coach after a proposed move to Vasco stalled over his release clause. According to Globo.com, the coach reversed course when the Rio club could not meet the payment terms.
An agreement had been close, but Coritiba insisted on an upfront R$ 4 million fee, as set out in his contract. Vasco sought to pay in three instalments, while Coritiba demanded the full deposit before releasing him.
He therefore did not fly to Rio de Janeiro on Thursday night as expected, staying in Curitiba. On Friday he pulled out of the Vasco deal and continued in charge of Coritiba.
He is travelling with the squad to Porto Alegre and will lead a training game against Internacional at Beira-Rio on Saturday morning.
The move had seemed advanced, with his agent Hugo Magalhães posting a celebratory photo alongside Seabra between Wednesday night and Thursday. Vasco were caught off guard, having anticipated his arrival to press on with a coaching handover.
Behind the scenes, Coritiba were seen to push the negotiation to its limit, backed by the contract and unwilling to relax the payment method. Vasco tried to find a solution without an immediate R$ 4 million outlay, and members of Seabra’s prospective staff were left waiting on travel plans.
