Fifa has removed Santos from the list of clubs under a transfer ban, allowing the Brazilian side to register Uruguayan midfielder Christian Oliva.
According to Globo.com, Santos this week paid €2.56 million, about R$ 15.3 million at the current rate, to Arouca of Portugal for João Basso’s transfer. That debt had led to Fifa’s sanction.
Signed from Nacional, Oliva has been training at CT Rei Pelé, but the veto arrived before his registration could be finalised. The lifting of the sanction clears that path.
In January, the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld Fifa’s ruling over the Basso debt, with Basso having joined Vila Belmiro in 2023 under Andrés Rueda’s administration. The club had 45 days to pay a little over R$ 15 million, but initially did not settle with the Portuguese side.
On 19 February, Fifa placed Santos on the list of teams barred from registering new players for three windows, a move that surprised the board, who believed the amount could be paid by 26 February.
Oliva could be available to head coach Juan Pablo Vojvoda for the fixture against Mirassol in the fifth round of the Campeonato Brasileiro on 10 March at 21:30 Brasília time, at the Maião in Mirassol.
