Flamengo have agreed the sale of 20-year-old centre-back Iago to Orlando City, from the United States, after limited first-team minutes this year.
According to Globo.com, the agreement was reached on Monday, with only paperwork still to complete. The fee is 1.4 million dollars. Flamengo will retain a percentage of any future sale, and the club held 60% of his rights with Volta Redonda owning 40%.
Iago’s contract was due to expire at the end of the year. He had a renewal offer, but a lack of opportunities at senior level weighed against it. Having aged out of the under-20s, he became a regular in Filipe Luís’s side in mid 2025 yet still struggled for chances.
Flamengo received Orlando’s proposal in mid January but waited for Bap’s approval before closing talks. The defender has featured for youth national teams and attracted interest from clubs in Brazil and abroad, including enquiries from Europe and Saudi Arabia.
He captained the group that won the youth Libertadores and the age-category world title. Iago scored the equaliser against Barcelona in the final at Maracanã, and also found the net on his Carioca debut this year.
Iago joined Flamengo’s under-17s in 2021 after emerging at Volta Redonda. That club may also have provided his farewell opponents, and he has made only four senior appearances.
