Flamengo hit record nine 2026 World Cup call-ups, reach 50 all-time

Flamengo recorded a club-high nine World Cup call-ups in 2026, with players selected for the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada. According to Globo.com, this took the club to 50 World Cup representatives across all editions.
The nine were Alex Sandro, Danilo, Léo Pereira and Lucas Paquetá for Brazil, Varela, De la Cruz and Arrascaeta for Uruguay, Plata for Ecuador and Carrascal for Colombia.
Before this year, Flamengo had reached four call-ups on only two occasions, in 1958 and 2022. The club now rank second for World Cup call-ups, level with Botafogo, behind São Paulo on 54. Palmeiras have 39, Vasco 38 and Fluminense 33.
Seven of those players became world champions with Brazil, Joel, Moacir, Dida and Zagallo in 1958, Brito in 1970, Gilmar in 1994 and Juninho Paulista in 2002.
By nationality, Flamengo’s World Cup call-ups break down as follows, Brazil 39, Uruguay five, Ecuador two, Peru two, Chile one and Colombia one.
Three represented their countries at more than one World Cup while at the club, Varela and Arrascaeta for Uruguay in 2022 and 2026, and Zico in 1978, 1982 and 1986.
