Arrascaeta is racing to be fit for the World Cup after fracturing his clavicle on 29 April in the Libertadores. Flamengo doctor Fernando Sassaki has given a positive update as the No 10 undergoes intensive treatment.

"We are now moving into the phase of removing Arrascaeta's stitches. His progress has been very positive, he is pain free and doing all the physiotherapy work full time. That comes down to his commitment, the care he takes of himself and the structure Flamengo are providing at this moment," said Sassaki. He told FlamengoTV.

He added: "We will repeat the X-ray this week and keep advancing his recovery. The outlook has been excellent, above all because of the signs he has shown, a clean wound, no pain, performing all movements without difficulty."

Flamengo are working to a 45-day recovery timeframe, so he should be ready to resume training in the week the World Cup begins for Uruguay. On the team’s return to the Brasileirão at the end of July, he is not expected to be a problem.

As he is only due to return for Flamengo after the World Cup, he will miss the following fixtures: Vitória (Copa do Brasil), Athletico-PR (Brasileirão), Estudiantes-ARG (Libertadores), Palmeiras (Brasileirão), Cusco-PER (Libertadores) and Coritiba (Brasileirão).

The first of those is on Thursday 14 at Barradão, where Flamengo visit Vitória in the second leg of the fifth phase of the Copa do Brasil. Kick-off is at 21:30 Brasília time.
