Flamengo clinched their 40th Campeonato Carioca on Sunday, beating Fluminense on penalties. According to Globo.com, focus now shifts to the season’s leading competitions, with the club defending the Brasileirão and the Libertadores.

Within Rio de Janeiro, their superiority since 2001 is clear. The current three-time champions have lifted 13 state titles this century, ahead of Fluminense and Botafogo on 5 each, with Vasco on 3.

Nationally and continentally, the dominance has been underpinned by recent seasons. Since 2001, Flamengo have won four Brasileirões and four Copas do Brasil, plus three Supercopas and three Libertadores.

The exception is the Recopa Sul-Americana. Flamengo were champions in 2020 and runners-up in 2023 and 2026, while Inter lead Brazilians in the tournament since 2001 with two titles, 2007 and 2011.

Their immediate test comes on Wednesday, when they host Cruzeiro at the Maracanã in round five of the Brasileirão. They will seek to underline their 21st-century supremacy at home and across South America.
