Sunderland have signed Belgium international Thomas Meunier on a two-year deal, the 34-year-old right-back arriving after his Lille contract expired. He will wear number 12 at the Stadium of Light.
Meunier completed his medical earlier this week and will link up with Régis Le Bris’ squad in early August after representing Belgium at the 2026 World Cup. He brings more than 550 senior club appearances and 83 caps to a group preparing for Premier League and Europa League campaigns.
The defender progressed from Belgium’s lower leagues to establish himself at Club Brugge, winning the Belgian Pro League and Belgian Cup.
Director of football Florent Ghisolfi said Meunier’s experience, professionalism and leadership should benefit Sunderland on and off the pitch, adding that early talks left the club convinced of his fit. He believes the Belgian has performed at the highest level for leading European teams and that his mentality, character and quality could positively influence the squad.
Meunier cited Sunderland’s ambition and Europa League qualification as key to his choice, having considered other options. He said his first taste of Premier League football was an exciting challenge and he was impressed by the club’s project and determination to progress. He hopes to add experience, give everything for the team and build a strong connection with supporters.
