Thomas Meunier joins Sunderland on free, strongest XI taking shape | OneFootball

Sunderland have signed Belgium defender Thomas Meunier on a free, making him their first addition of the summer window. He featured at the World Cup, where Belgium went out 2-1 to Spain in the last 16.

The player said on the club website that the club’s ambition, project and desire persuaded him to accept a two-year deal, and that European competition was a major factor after Sunderland’s surprise Europa League qualification.

He brings extensive pedigree, having played in the Champions League and Europa League with Club Brugge, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Lille. He also described the Premier League as a challenge he has long wanted to experience.

The 34-year-old right-back left Lille earlier this month to become a free agent, then moved quickly to take the next step in his club career.

A potential strongest XI under Regis Le Bris could read: GK Robin Roefs, RB Thomas Meunier, LB Trai Hume, CB Dan Ballard, CB Omar Alderete, CM Granit Xhaka, CM Noah Sadiki, CM Habib Diarra, LW Enzo Le Fee, RW Chemsdine Talbi, ST Brian Brobbey.
