Former Flamengo players Romário and Walter Casagrande have traded barbs on social media in recent days, mixing football and politics.
It followed Romário attending a football event in Rio de Janeiro, after which Casagrande questioned his presence. According to UOL, Romário replied with a statement.
In that note, he said he is on a 121-day leave from parliamentary duties and that it is natural for a senator to receive invitations to football-related activities, meetings and institutional agendas.
Romário attended FutSummit Rio at the start of the week, a multi-day programme in the city that drew ex-players, journalists and influencers.
Romário, 60, has been a senator since 2015 and is currently on leave, with Bruno Bonetti serving as his substitute. He is also president of América-RJ.
Casagrande does not hold political office. He is a columnist for UOL and worked in television from 1998 to 2022.
Romário played for Flamengo in the 1990s after leaving Barcelona (ESP), featuring in more than 200 games. Casagrande made about 40 appearances for the club in 1993.
