Villarreal's 0-2 defeat to Real Madrid was overshadowed by Juan Foyth suffering a rupture of his left Achilles tendon, a blow that ends his season and his World Cup dream.
The club said in a statement that medical tests have confirmed the injury and that details of the surgery he must undergo will be communicated shortly.
The Argentina international left in minute 23 after an awkward, accidental movement. He clutched his left leg as he fell and looked distraught, appearing to mouth that he had broken it.
At half-time the initial assessment pointed to an Achilles problem in his left leg, with further examinations scheduled for today.
A recovery timeframe is yet to be set, though such injuries typically require six to nine months before a return to competition.
