The France squad have rallied behind Didier Deschamps at this World Cup, praising his man-management as he oversees his final World Cup in charge. According to Le Progres, no player has questioned his handling of the group since the start.
In Boston, Deschamps has barely altered his approach, though he has relaxed it slightly, granting a free evening after eight days on site and another day off following the win over Morocco. He has adapted to stop younger players feeling cooped up at the Four Seasons.
Day to day he gives attention to both starters and squad players to preserve harmony. Lucas Digne, who began the competition on the bench, says the staff keep everyone engaged and are always listening.
For several of the 26, he has been pivotal in their development. Dayot Upamecano recalls being supported during a difficult start with the seniors, saying Deschamps consistently found the right words and that giving everything on the pitch is also for him.
The loss of Deschamps’ mother in the United States has brought the group even closer to their manager. On 21 June, Iraq head coach Graham Arnold noted that the players seem to want to give him something special at his last World Cup. They are now two matches from a fitting send-off.
