According to Glorioso 1904, Francisco Benitez, a former Benfica presidential candidate and founder of Movimento Servir o Benfica, has criticised Rui Costa’s board for a passive stance amid the José Mourinho and Real Madrid saga.

In a social media post, Benitez said the club risked repeating recent mistakes. He recalled that a few months ago Benfica’s reputation and history were questioned after a match against Real Madrid, arguing the reaction came late and poorly and that the club largely watched as the media passed judgment.

He was referring to the Prestianni case, using it to attack Benfica’s current communications approach.

His intervention comes as Florentino Pérez has publicly stated an intention to hire José Mourinho if he is re-elected Real Madrid president.

Benitez contended that the lack of a clear response from the Benfica hierarchy has fuelled speculation over Mourinho’s future. He said the club had become a mere spectator to events, dependent on others’ decisions while the media sought to interpret the board’s silence.
