FC Bayern are continuing to work intensively on their squad planning for the coming season. The Munich club could become particularly active in the full-back positions in the summer. Several interesting candidates are already being discussed – and the reasons for strengthening are obvious
At first glance, FC Bayern appear to have a solid line-up at full-back, with Alphonso Davies, Josip Stanisic, Konrad Laimer and Hiroki Ito giving Vincent Kompany several options for the defensive positions
However, a closer look reveals that the record champions could well be in need of action. While Stanisic and Laimer have impressed above all with their defensive work, strong running and reliability, both players sometimes lack the creative elements in the final third. Especially against deep-lying opponents, technical solutions and playful quality on the flanks are now more important than ever
What’s more, Raphael Guerreiro is set to leave the club and Ito’s versatility means that he is not exclusively planned as a full-back. Should there be further personnel changes in the summer, Bayern will probably have to react in this position
Givairo Read from Feyenoord Rotterdam is still one of the best-known candidates. The Dutchman has been watched by FC Bayern for some time and, according to information from the Netherlands, there have even been contacts with the player’s side
Read is regarded as a modern full-back with high technical quality and excellent build-up play skills. His dynamism and ball security make him a profile that would fit in perfectly with Vincent Kompany’s requirements
However, a potential transfer is complicated by the fact that the 19-year-old missed large parts of last season due to a lengthy injury. Read is also being closely monitored by Manchester City, which makes the competitive situation much tougher

While Nathaniel Brown is currently being talked about as a concrete transfer target, Alejandro Grimaldo could definitely be an alternative from a sporting point of view, even if he is a different type of player
The Spaniard impresses less with his athleticism and more with his exceptional technique, his precise crosses and his enormous game intelligence. Grimaldo would add creativity to Bayern’s game, especially in phases of possession
Another advantage is that the Leverkusen man can move far inwards in the build-up play and create additional space in midfield, allowing defensive-minded players on the opposite flank to make better use of their strengths
Should the opportunity to prise Grimaldo away from Leverkusen actually arise, the Spaniard would certainly be one of the most attractive solutions on the market. However, if the Brown deal is feasible and both clubs reach an agreement on the transfer fee, then he is currently the priority from FC Bayern’s point of view

Less prominent, but no less interesting are Carlos Romero and Marco Palestra
Romero most recently played on loan for Espanyol Barcelona and was one of the biggest surprises of the last La Liga season. With six goals and three assists, the Spaniard impressively underlined his attacking qualities
In particular, his technical training, his strong opening and his sense of balance between offense and defense make him an extremely interesting profile. With Villarreal on the verge of a shake-up, an opportunity could arise in the summer
Palestra has also come into focus. The 21-year-old had a strong season at Cagliari and is now regarded as one of Italy’s most exciting defensive talents
His greatest strengths lie less in his spectacular dribbling and more in his intelligence in the game. Palestra impresses with clean positioning, a high level of passing security and tactical flexibility. He can be deployed both as a right-back and in a back three, making him an ideal fit for modern playing systems
One thing is clear: the importance of full-backs in top-flight soccer has changed massively in recent years. It’s no longer just about defending the wing, but also about shaping the game, resistance to pressing and tactical variability. This is precisely why FC Bayern will continue to keep a close eye on the market. Whether it’s Brown, Read, Grimaldo, Romero or Palestra – Munich clearly have several interesting solutions on their radar.
