Gabriel Gudmundsson overcame a chaotic build-up to start Sweden’s World Cup opener against Tunisia. The Leeds United defender featured as the Swedes won 5-1.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the Leeds United left wing-back missed training before the game and isolated from the squad after being described as in a bad state by Sweden’s press department. He recovered in time to reprise his Elland Road role on the world stage.
His preparation had already been hit by a hamstring injury sustained in the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea. That proved his final Leeds outing of the season as the Whites secured safety and finished 14th in the Premier League.
Gudmundsson started and played 65 minutes, signalling to the bench before being replaced with Sweden three goals to the good. Potter said afterwards he believed it was cramp.
The result left Sweden well placed in Group F before facing the Netherlands on Saturday, then Japan on June 26. The group carries strong Leeds interest, with former favourite Crysencio Summerville a fixture for the Dutch and current hero Ao Tanaka in Japan’s squad. Summerville scored his side’s second in their 2-2 opener with Japan, while Tanaka was an unused substitute.
