Gary Neville has offered a glowing verdict on Sunderland goalkeeper Matty Young, backing the 19-year-old to thrive in the game amid growing England speculation. According to Sunderland Echo, Neville praised the teenager’s progress.

At Salford City, he is playing regular senior football. He made 27 appearances in all competitions last season, and has already reached 45 this term.

The academy product joined Sunderland at the age of seven and signed his first professional deal in November 2023. A loan at Darlington brought his early senior minutes and he was named the club’s Young Player of the Season. Further spells at Salford have been seen by Sunderland as ideal for consistent game time.

Internationally, Young has moved through England’s U18s, U19s and U20s, then earned a call-up to the U21s. His progress has prompted suggestions he could one day challenge for the senior setup.

Neville said: “He’s done really well. Obviously, he is on loan with us until the end of the season. I hope we can get into League One so he can come with us, and he is very composed for a young goalkeeper. He has a big future.”
