For long stretches of the season, Roma had the best defense in Europe’s top five leagues.

From Svilar to the trio of Mancini, Ndicka, and Hermoso, the contribution should be extended to the entire team, which worked well without possession.

For Gian Piero Gasperini, the defensive block was crucial to reaching the Champions League.

It’s important to remember that Roma’s central defenders are also the team’s top scorers in Serie A (10). A valuable dual role that the Grugliasco-born coach doesn’t want to give up.

Gasperini has sent a clear signal to the club in discussions about building the team of the future: he wants to keep the defensive block from the recently concluded season intact and aim even higher. Here’s what Il Tempo reports.

Roma finished the season with the second-best defense in Serie A, conceding just 31 goals in 38 games. The four pillars of the Giallorossi defense are in different situations: Svilar is considered indispensable, Hermoso will remain as his annual renewal clause has been exercised, Mancini has been secured by Gasperini, while Ndicka is the player most rumored to be involved in the transfer market.

The 1999-born player seems the prime candidate to leave the capital. He has also attracted interest from several clubs abroad.

Gasperini, however, is looking more at Ziolkowski and Ghilardi to secure the necessary capital gains by June 30th rather than the Ivorian center-back.
