Gennaro Gattuso has been officially appointed as Lazio’s new manager on a one-year contract worth €1.5 million, with an option for a second season. Official confirmation arrived on Tuesday.
Il Messaggero reports that the deal contains an automatic extension that would activate with any top 12 finish. The paper also suggests the clause reflects modest ambitions for the coming campaign.
The 48-year-old replaces Maurizio Sarri, who terminated his Lazio contract after a troubled campaign, then signed for Atalanta.
Lazio have missed out on European football twice in a row, finishing 7th under Marco Baroni last term and 9th with Sarri this season. The slide could continue as the club works to sell key defensive figures, notably Alessio Romagnoli, Mario Gila and Ivan Provedel.
Even with a top 12 finish, the clause would not guarantee Gattuso’s job, as the hierarchy could still dismiss him. In that scenario, he would be due a further year’s salary unless a settlement is reached.
