Georgiy Sudakov is refusing to fade from the picture at Benfica, with the Ukrainian midfielder working to win José Mourinho’s trust despite a recent lack of minutes. According to Glorioso 1904, he has been training intensely at Seixal to turn things around.
He has not started since the victory against Vitória de Guimarães, and has not featured at all since the draw with Casa Pia, when he came on after 70 minutes and was among those criticised by the coach. Since then, he has stayed on the bench against Nacional, Sporting and Moreirense.
There is no friction between player and manager. Internally his effort has been recognised, and the staff are implementing a tailored plan to raise his output, particularly his attacking aggression, an area in which Mourinho has demanded more.
Competition is fierce. The trio of Fredrik Aursnes, Richard Ríos and Leandro Barreiro has convinced the coach, who is content with the current midfield dynamic. Even so, the No 10, a significant investment that could reach 32 million euros, believes he can regain consideration and is focused on taking any opening.
This season Sudakov, valued at 28 million euros, has played 36 matches for Benfica, 22 in the Liga Portugal Betclic, nine in the Champions League, three in the Taça de Portugal and two in the Taça da Liga. Across 2,381 minutes he has scored four goals and provided five assists.
