Germany were eliminated by Paraguay on penalties in the 2026 World Cup last 32, the match finishing 1-1 after extra time before Paraguay won the shootout 4-3.
It is the first time Germany have gone out of a World Cup via a penalty shootout, having previously always progressed when spot kicks were required.
Their four earlier World Cup shootout victories came against France in the 1982 semi-finals, 3-3 after extra time and 5-4 on penalties, then Mexico in the 1986 quarter-finals, 0-0 and 4-1.
They defeated England in the 1990 semi-finals, 1-1 and 4-3, with Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle missing, then Argentina in the 2006 quarter-finals, 1-1 and 4-2, when Lionel Messi remained on the bench.
Across the World Cup and the Euro, Germany had won six shootouts from six since 1980, losing only once, to Czechoslovakia in the 1976 Euro final, punished by Panenka after a 2-2 draw and a 3-5 shootout. This time, their campaign ends in the last 32.
