Glasgow Rangers are reportedly interested in making a move this January for Manchester United defender Jonny Evans.

The Northern Ireland international made a shock return to Old Trafford in 2023 in a move that was widely ridiculed initially.

Evans had the last laugh however as he played 30 times in his first season back at the club and generally did not look out of place as many had predicted.

Nonetheless, this season has seen a considerable reduction in minutes following the summer acquisitions of Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro.

With new manager Ruben Amorim looking to sign his own defenders and talents such as Godwill Kukonki coming through the academy, it appears like this might be the Belfast native’s last season at the club.

The Daily Record report that one club who would potentially be interested in Evans’ services is Rangers.

“Jonny Evans has been suggested by the Rangers board as a possible transfer option to try and help ease their current defensive crisis.”

He “is one name that was suggested to the manager by a member of the club hierarchy. However, the Northern Ireland legend’s age is thought to be putting Phillipe Clement off the idea.”

It is stated that the Rangers boss would prefer to sign a younger profile of player as he already has Leon Balogun in his squad to provide experience.

Former United scout Mick Brown has had his say on a potential move claiming, “If he wants to keep playing, I think a move to Rangers would suit him.”

“They’ve shown some interest and, with all due respect, it would be a move to a less demanding league than the Premier League.”

Evans is clearly not in Amorim’s plans as he has only played in two matches during the Portuguese’s reign and has not started since the former Sporting Lisbon manager’s first game in charge away to Ipswich Town at the end of November.
